BJP Names C P Radhakrishnan as NDA’s Vice-Presidential Candidate
The BJP has chosen Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan, a veteran political figure from Tamil Nadu and a long-time RSS member, as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election on September 9. The announcement was made by BJP president J P Nadda after a meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Board on Sunday.
Radhakrishnan, who has decades of organisational and political experience, is widely regarded as a disciplined and moderate leader. His selection reflects the BJP’s confidence in a leader known for being understated yet effective in his political career.
From Tamil Nadu to National Spotlight
Radhakrishnan’s career has often stood out for his quiet but strategic approach. A senior DMK leader once described him as “a good man in the wrong party,” comparing his personality to that of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Such remarks highlight his ability to gain respect across political lines, even among opponents.
Governor with a Different Approach
In February 2023, when he was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, Radhakrishnan set a distinctive tone. He emphasised that Governors should rise above party affiliations and act as a bridge between state governments and the Centre, prioritising development over political rivalry.
During his tenure, he focused on initiatives aimed at uplifting tribal and underprivileged communities, a move that many observers considered a contrast to his predecessors. According to a senior RSS leader from Tamil Nadu, his approach was seen as both practical and people-oriented, steering clear of controversies that have often surrounded gubernatorial roles in southern states.
The Road Ahead
With his nomination as the NDA’s Vice-Presidential candidate, Radhakrishnan now steps onto the national stage at a crucial political moment. His reputation as a no-nonsense leader, combined with his long years of experience in the party and administration, is expected to play a key role in shaping his new responsibilities if elected.
