Chamba, Himachal Pradesh – August 20, 2025: Two mild but noticeable earthquakes struck the Chamba district in the early hours of Wednesday, causing alarm across the region already battered by monsoon storms. Thankfully, there have been no reports of casualties or structural damage so far.
Tremor Details:
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS):
-
The first tremor occurred at 03:27 AM IST with a magnitude of 3.3 at a depth of 20 km. Its epicenter was traced to latitude 32.87°N, longitude 76.09°E in Chamba.
-
About 72 minutes later, at 04:39 AM IST, the second tremor—slightly stronger at magnitude 4.0—hit at a shallower depth of 10 km. Its coordinates were 32.71°N, 76.11°E, also within Chamba district.
Why This Matters:
Chamba, like much of Himachal Pradesh, lies in Seismic Zone V, indicating a high risk of earthquake activity. While these recent tremors were moderate, their timing—amid intense monsoon weather—adds to mounting safety concerns.
Relatedly, just recently on August 18, Kangra witnessed a 3.9 magnitude tremor, which also passed without causing any damage.
