Mumbai, August 19, 2025 – Heavy rains continued to lash Maharashtra for the second consecutive day, bringing Mumbai and several districts of the Konkan region to a standstill. According to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai alone received around 300 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, causing waterlogging, transport disruption, and evacuations.
8 Dead in Nanded, 500 Evacuated in Mumbai
In Nanded district, eight people lost their lives following flash floods triggered by a cloudburst-like situation. In Mumbai, over 500 residents were evacuated from low-lying areas as the water level of the Mithi River rose dangerously. Disaster management teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are actively working in affected areas.
IMD Issues Red Alert for Konkan & Central Maharashtra
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, and ghat areas of central Maharashtra. The forecast warns of extremely heavy rainfall till August 20. Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Transportation Services Severely Hit

Railways: Central Railway suspended local train services on the Harbour Line between CSMT and Kurla due to waterlogging on tracks. Several long-distance trains have been delayed or diverted.

Air travel: Flights at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport faced delays, with some diversions reported.

Road traffic: Major routes including the Eastern Express Highway and Western Express Highway reported massive traffic jams due to waterlogging.
Agricultural Losses & Cropland Damage
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar confirmed that over 10 lakh acres of agricultural land across Maharashtra have been submerged under floodwaters. He assured that the government will announce relief measures soon for farmers who have suffered crop losses.
